Neurostrip
Abstract
The NeuroStrip demo will give attendees a practical look at how wearable surface EMG (sEMG) can be used to understand muscle activity in clinical and rehabilitation settings.
During the demo, we will use NeuroStrip to record muscle activity in real time while performing a range of simple movements and rehabilitation exercises. Attendees will be able to see how muscle activation changes between the left and right sides, across different movements and positions, and as the demands of a task change.
We will focus on how this information can help clinicians answer practical questions during rehabilitation. For example, is the injured muscle being appropriately recruited? Is another muscle compensating? Is muscle activation changing as the athlete or patient progresses through rehabilitation? By looking at muscle activity alongside measures such as force, we can start to build a clearer picture of what is happening beyond what can be observed from movement alone.
The demo will be interactive, with attendees able to see the EMG signals change live as different movements are performed. This provides a simple way to understand what the signal represents and how changes in muscle activation can be identified and interpreted.
We will also discuss some of the challenges that come with using sEMG in real-world settings, including individual variability, normalisation and the fact that muscle activation can change depending on the task and testing position.
The aim is to show how wearable sEMG can make objective muscle assessment more accessible in everyday clinical and rehabilitation environments, while also providing rich physiological data that can be used for further research and computational applications.
