Sovereign By Design: Indigenous-Centered Machine Learning for Health Equity
Krystal Tsosie
Abstract
As machine learning rapidly advances in healthcare, the need to respect Indigenous data governance and advance Indigenous digital sovereignty is more urgent than ever. Dr. Tsosie presents a demonstration of the Data for Indigenous Implementations Interventions and Innovation (D4I) Tribal Data Repository, which provides Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities flexibility to utilize federated machine learning models to purposively honor community-defined principles of data ownership, dynamic consent, and control. We explore how "sovereign by design" systems enable Tribal Nations to retain authority over their health data while participating in cutting-edge research and AI innovation.
