Portaging is a mode of transportation. It involves carrying a watercraft over land between lakes and rivers. Portaging requires humans working together with artificial tools they have created and natural elements of land, water, and wind.
In PORTAGING we explore the use of artificial intelligence to move beyond the boundaries of a single human's creativity into a collective co-creativity, augmented and uplifted by machine learning.
Join us on the discord #performance channel for an hour of live visual AI storytelling by humans, the story telling AI Dramatron, and several Image Generator AIs (StableDiffusion, Imagen/Parti, and more), and yourself through audience participation reactions on image alternatives which influence the direction of the story.

Tom is a New Zealand based artist investigating machine perception. His current work focuses on creating physical artworks that highlight how machines “see” and thus how they think, suggesting that these systems are capable of abstraction and conceptual thinking. He has exhibited computer based artwork internationally over the past 25 years with themes of artificial intelligence, interactivity, and computational creativity. He is currently a lecturer and researcher at University of Wellington School of Design where he teaches students the creative potential of computer programming and artificial intelligence.
Jason Baldridge (Google)
Jason Baldridge is a research scientist at Google working on grounded language understanding, with a focus on vision-and-language navigation, spatiotemporal representations, and connecting vision and language. Prior to Google, Jason was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he worked on categorial grammar, parsing, coreference, sentiment analysis, discourse structure, geolocation, and NLP for low resource languages.
