Understanding the Criticality of Human Adaptation when Designing Human-Centered AI Teammates

Research on human-centered AI teammates has often worked to create AI teammates that adapt around humans, but humans have a remarkable and natural ability to adapt around their environment and teammates. This paper capitalizes on human adaptability by showcasing how humans actively adapt around their AI teammates even when those teammates change. In doing so, results of a mixed-methods experiment (N = 60) demonstrates that human adaptation is a critical and natural component of human-centered AI teammate design.
