Wireless Networking at NIPS

Network Configuration for Microsoft Windows

The term "network adapter" is used in these instructions to refer to either a wired ethernet adapter or a 802.11b-compatible wireless adapter. Unfortunately we cannot offer support for the many different network adapters on the market - please consult the manufacturer's documentation if you have any questions.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu, open Control Panel and click on Switch to Classic View
  2. When the control panel appears in classic view, double-click the Network Connections icon
  3. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button
  5. Select Obtain IP address automatically
  6. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
  7. Click OK. Continue backing your way out of the control panels by clicking OK at each window

Windows 2000

  • From the Start menu, open Settings and click on Network and Dialup Connections
  • Double-click on the Local Area Connection icon
  • Click the Properties button
  • Select Obtain IP address automatically
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
  • Click the Advanced… button in the lower right
  • Select DHCP enabled and click OK. Continue backing your way out of the control panels by clicking OK at each window

Windows NT

Please note that it may be necessary to reboot your computer before your changes will take effect

  • From the Start menu, open Settings and click on Control Panel
  • Double-click on the Network icon
  • Under the Protocol tab, find your network adapter, select it, and click on the Properties button
  • Select the IP Address menu tab and click once on the Obtain an IP address automatically button. (Do not erase the IP address or netmask shown in your control panel. When you select Obtain an IP address automatically, these fields become inactive.)
  • Select the DNS tab and delete any IP addresses in the DNS Service Search Order list
  • Click on OK

  • Double-click on the Network icon
  • Under the Configuration tab, find your network adapter, click on it, and click on the Properties button
  • Select the IP Address menu tab and click once on the Obtain an IP address automatically button. (Do not erase the IP address or netmask shown in your control panel. When you select Obtain an IP address automatically, these fields become inactive.)
  • Select the DNS Configuration menu tab
  • Select Disable DNS
  • Select the Gateway menu tab
  • Select the Gateway Address and click on Remove
  • Click OK
